A Sweet Twist on a Classic Favorite
We all know that corndogs are one of the famous and favorite foods during carnivals and one of the popular street foods all over the world. A corndog (also spelled corndog and also known by several other names) is a sausage (usually a wiener) on a stick that has been coated in a thick layer of cornmeal batter and deep-fried. It originated in the United States and is commonly found in American cuisine.
A Brief History of Corndogs
Corndogs made their debut in the early 20th century. They became popular in the 1940s, and their exact origins are a bit disputed. Some claim they were invented in Texas, while others credit Minnesota. Regardless of their exact birthplace, corndogs quickly became a hit at state fairs and carnivals across the country. Their portable nature and the delightful combination of savory hotdogs and sweet, crispy cornmeal batter made them an instant favorite.

Making Honey Corndogs at Home
Making corndogs at home is incredibly easy, and adding a touch of honey gives them an extra layer of sweetness that pairs perfectly with the savory hotdog. I recently tried a homemade honey corndog recipe from Natasha's Kitchen on YouTube, and it was a hit! Here's how you can make them:
Ingredients:
- 6 to 7 pieces of hotdog
- 6-7 pieces of wooden sticks
- 3/4 cup fine yellow cornmeal
- 1/2 + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/8 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt (pinch)
- 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons buttermilk
- 1 small egg
- 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1/2 tablespoon honey
Instructions:
- Prepare the Hotdogs: Insert a wooden stick into each hotdog, leaving enough of the stick exposed to hold.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, vegetable oil, and honey.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until smooth and well combined. The batter should be thick enough to coat the hotdogs.
- Heat the Oil: In a deep pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). You’ll need enough oil to completely submerge the corndogs.
- Coat the Hotdogs: Dip each hotdog into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off.
- Fry the Corndogs: Carefully place the coated hotdogs into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes, turning as needed to cook evenly.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the corndogs from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve warm, with your favorite dipping sauces.
